Regular Dental Care
It is extremely important that you see your dentist before the braces are placed and during the time you are in braces. He or she will check for cavities, monitor the gums and bone, and clean your teeth. We emphasize this, as we are only an aid to your family dentist, not a replacement.
First Aid for Braces
Emergency situations can be minimized very easily if you simply follow the instructions given at the bonding appointment. We will also teach you to handle the most common problems during your visits. In spite of our combined best efforts problems can arise that require special attention by us.
Below we have compiled a list of the most common problems along with a self-help guide. Please refer to this list because many times by following these guidelines you will save a trip into the office.
- If your teeth become sore after a visit, take your favorite over the counter analgesic such as Tylenol or Advil. Also having a glass of ice water and sipping it over an extended time may relieve your discomfort.
- If food becomes stuck in the braces or between the teeth, dental floss or the proxy brush in your home care packet will dislodge the food. Occasionally the careful use of a toothpick may be required.
- If a wire is sticking you push it towards the braces with the eraser end of a pencil. If this does not work use the supplied wax or a small piece of sugarless gum.
- If the main wire comes out of the tube on a back molar tooth try to reinsert it using small needle nose pliers or tweezers. As a last resort, if unable to contact us, a small wire cutter or nail clipper can be used to cut the loose end of the wire.
- If a brace is loosened from a tooth it usually remains connected to the wire and causes minimal or no discomfort. If it has moved into an uncomfortable position attempt to move it with your finger or tweezers. Even though it will likely not hurt it is important to call the office so we can schedule a time to reattach the brace.
If you are not able to solve the problem please call the office to schedule a time to see you. If you have a true emergency during non-office hours please call the office at 812-333-1051 to get the emergency contact number.
